How far would you go to survive? Kiyoko has been shipwrecked. A storm has left her alone with her husband on the beach of a deserted South Sea island, destroying their yacht and leaving them helpless. However, their solitude is not to last for long. Soon after their arrival twenty-three young men are also washed up on the shore and Kiyoko must begin to adjust to life as the only woman in this wild and treacherous place. Intent on survival and desperate to escape, Kiyoko must negotiate this freshly evolving community with care. When her husband dies in mysterious circumstances, and a new set of castaways arrive, her status on the island changes and she is forced to abandon the trappings of civilisation in order to keep herself safe. Tokyo Island showcases Natsuo Kirino's masterful skill in creating a taut, psychologically intense narrative, and takes us into the dark depths of a woman's mind, as she is struggles with an inhospitable environment and the choices thrust on her by the danger that surrounds her.
